Analysing the Plethora of Confusing Terms in Open and Distance Learning

Abstract

Words affect how we conceptualise problems, prioritise issues, and forge responses. As a result, languages should strive to ensure convenience and minimise effort at the phonetic, lexical, morphological, and syntactic levels (known as linguistic economy). However, Open and Distance Learning (ODL), has a plethora of terminologies such as Open Learning (OL), Open and Flexible Learning (OFL), Distance and Resource Based Leaning, adult education, correspondence learning, online learning, electronic learning, distributed learning, flexible and distance learning, distance education, internet-mediated teaching, web-based education, Computer-mediated Communication (CMC), computer-assisted learning, web-based learning, technology-enhanced learning, blended learning, hybrid learning, integrated learning, inclusive education, e-learning, virtual classrooms, and virtual system of learning, to mention a few. This causes confusion and a lack of focus for users. Against this backdrop, this current study undertakes a componential analysis of these terminologies to identify the distinct ones that should be retained, those that overlap and should be merged, and those that are redundant and obsolete, proposing that they be phased out. The findings inform the rethinking of ODL terminology to ensure the clarity, brevity, and user-friendliness of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) literature.
